A popular holiday haven, the town is situated about 120 km from Cape Town, is within a short drive from the casino in Caledon, and is about 60 minutes from the major shopping and business centres in Somerset West and the Strand.
The population in 2001 exceeded 55 000 and has grown steadily ever since. The property market in the area is booming and it's very easy to see why.
Hermanus can rightly be called the Overberg's boom town. It has, in fact, been described as the fastest growing town in the Overstrand Municipality. The Overstrand municipal area also includes the towns of Pearly Beach, Franskraal, Kleinbaai, Gansbaai, Die Kelders, Stanford, Kleinmond, Betty's Bay, Pringle Bay and Rooiels. The municipality's main offices are in Hermanus.
Greater Hermanus stretches from Sandown Bay and Fisherhaven in the West, through Hawston, Vermont, Onrus and Sandbaai to Voelklip in the East. The properties on offer in each of these areas are simply spectacular.
The town, which is built on the shores of Walker Bay, is known for its beautiful beaches, mild climate and superb facilities for holiday makers and residents. Apart from facilities which cater for almost all popular sporting codes, the town is world famous for its whale watching and the Whale Festival which takes place each year in September. Large numbers of the Southern Right whales can be seen from the shore or from sightseeing boats in the bay.
Numerous businesses, which provide building and renovation services, have been established in the area over the past few years. There are also a very large number of 'bed-and-breakfast' establishments, properties to rent and hotels for tourists and holiday makers.
